When Your Christmas Wish Does Not Come True

When Your Christmas Wish Does Not Come True

Christmas is a very hard time when people are going through a divorce. I often ask myself why do children have to endure a divorce, especially during the holidays. Most recently as I was on line waiting to see Santa with my little one, a little boy about 8 yrs old brought a letter for Santa to read. In the letter, he asked Santa to bring his parents back together. Santa peered through his glasses at both parents and shared the boy’s wish with them. The look that was on the mother’s face was that of hope, the father had the look of “I am only doing this because it is the last year that I will be here with you.” It was sad to see these looks, but the saddest was the disappointed look on that boy’s face. Santa Claus responded that this was a very tall order and he only specialized in gifts that he could warep. The little boy took his picture and walked away.

I could not help but wonder what will happen to this little boy’s faith in Santa Claus, but most importantly, in his parents. and when that never happened he seemed to have lost his hope and his belief in Santa. In situations like this, your first desire is to helo that little boy. This Chrsitams let’s be sensitive to all we encounter especially if they have been through a divorce.

Christmas Countdown Day 14

Have you ever walked into a little mom and pop store and been captivated not by what is in it but in the way it made you feel?  Perhaps they have soft lighting, candles, and the friendliness of the staff?

Often we are awakened by scents and tones in a room.  Likewise, our home should be the same.  During the Christmas season, there are many options that we can use to help make our home friendly, warm, and inviting.  If you have different candle scents, you can light a different one periodically depending on the mood you are trying to create.  There are pine scented candles to give the scent of a Christmas tree or a cookie scent to give the scent of cookies baking in the oven.  Whatever your scent preference is, light a candle and enjoy the calm of the flickering flame.

Christmas Countdown Day 10

Do you remember how excited you were as a child during Christmas?  As soon as you started seeing candy canes, you knew that Christmas was almost here.

Life was simple with wishes for a toy truck, a train, a doll, a bicycle, or a kitchen set.

Kids were entertained with reading stories by the Christmas tree every night staying on their best behavior.

The times have changed to get the latest greatest electronic toys that get opened in the first hour of Christmas morning and then possibly put aside later that afternoon because the boredom with it settled in.  Today let’s rewind back to those simpler days at least for the Christmas season.

Read a book under the tree, wrap gifts together, sing Christmas carols as you decorate the Christmas tree, and enjoy breakfast together Christmas morning before opening gifts.  Our family tradition for years has been to have everyone together for a big breakfast with the aromas of freshly baked blueberry muffins and the warmth of coffee, hot cocoa, and breakfast casseroles.

Those special moments together before a marathon of everyone opening gifts one at a time are the memories we treasure.

Christmas Countdown Day 2

Part of the fun of celebrating Christmas is wrapping the treasures that you have found for family and friends.

This year as you wrap your gifts think about each person that you have bought a gift for and take a moment to remember a special memory about that person; write that special memory on their Christmas card as an added gift.

As you wrap gifts, remember to wrap on a table or countertop so as not to strain your back and neck wrapping on the floor.
